How it works

How HFT Latency Arbitrage Works

Latency arbitrage is a trading strategy that uses a faster price feed to see a price move a fraction of a second before it appears in the broker's terminal. The advantage comes from faster access to market data: a direct connection to the data source, servers located close to exchanges and liquidity providers, and low-latency protocols such as FIX and ITCH.

From Price Gap to Trade in 5 Steps

  1. Fast price arrives

A fast data feed (an exchange, a liquidity provider or a WP Fast Source) delivers the new price first.

  2. Broker quote lags

The broker's quote for the same symbol still shows the old price for a few milliseconds.

  3. Gap is measured

Westernpips Private 7 compares the two prices in real time and calculates the gap.

  4. Order is sent

When the gap exceeds your threshold, the algorithm sends an order to the broker at the old price.

  5. Position is closed

The trade is closed when the broker's quote catches up, or by take profit, stop loss or time limit.

A real trade on the chart: the fast feed moves first, the gap between fast and broker prices opens a sell, and the position closes when the broker price catches up.
Westernpips Private 7 gap analyzer showing buy and sell gaps between fast feed and broker quotes over time
The gap analyzer shows how far the broker's quote lags behind the fast feed. Whether a trade captures the gap depends on execution delay, slippage and spread, so test your settings on recorded ticks in the Back Tester.

Why Do Forex Broker Quotes Lag?

A retail broker's price passes through several steps before it reaches your terminal: the broker receives quotes from its liquidity providers, processes them in its pricing software (the bridge) and sends them to the trading platform. Each step adds delay, and many brokers do not use the fastest data channels because they are expensive. As a result, the displayed quote can briefly lag behind faster market data. In a study of XAUUSD quotes at three brokers by Westernpips researcher Alexander Vinsky, the median stale-quote window was 34–56 ms. Many brokers restrict this type of trading in their terms, so check your broker's rules before you start. Read the full guide to latency arbitrage →

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Westernpips Private 7 is an HFT multi-terminal for latency arbitrage in Forex, CFDs, futures and crypto. It compares quotes from fast data feeds with broker quotes, calculates the gap in real time and opens and closes trades automatically using built-in algorithms such as One Leg, Two Leg Lock and Trade Copier.

In most countries latency arbitrage is a legal trading strategy: it uses publicly available prices that simply arrive faster from one source than from another. What matters in practice is your broker's rules. Some brokers welcome this type of trading, others limit it in their client agreements, so choose a broker whose terms fit your strategy. Our broker guide explains what to look for. (General information, not legal advice.)

Private 7 connects to brokers, liquidity providers and exchanges over FIX, API, ITCH and TCP, to cTrader, and to MetaTrader 4/5 through the EA connector. It trades currencies, metals, indices, commodities, futures and crypto. There are 37+ connectors and 10 built-in WP Fast Sources.

A Private 7 licence, a VPS located close to your broker's server, a fast data source (a built-in WP Fast Source or your own feed) and a broker account. Our team installs the software on your VPS. See Getting Started with Arbitrage Trading.

Buying takes three simple steps: you sign the Client Agreement online, our agent sends you the payment details (currently cryptocurrency wallets), and right after the payment is confirmed you receive the software, connectors and guides. Prices are on the Buy Now page.

Instead of a demo, you can see how the software performs on real money: verified Myfxbook monitoring in the Real Accounts Performance section, broker trading statements and videos of live trading. Before you buy, our team will answer your questions about the software.

Yes. After purchase you receive an installation package, connectors, instructions, video guides and example preset files. Because every broker has its own spread and commission, the best results come from presets tuned to your broker: record its quotes and test settings in the Back Tester. Step-by-step instructions are included, and our support team helps with tuning.

Yes. Updates are free for all licensed users, with no time limit.

Yes. A full user guide covers installation, key settings and every algorithm. It is available in the Westernpips documentation, together with video manuals and the user forum.

Yes. Our support team will recommend VPS providers in the data centre you need, so your setup gets the lowest possible latency. See also our guide to Forex VPS for latency arbitrage.

There are two ways. You can subscribe to WP Fast Sources: 10 built-in low-latency quote feeds that are ready to use right away. Or you can connect fast quotes from your own accounts with liquidity providers, exchanges and brokers through 37+ FIX, API, ITCH and TCP connectors. Contact our support team for WP Fast Sources plans and prices, and see our overview of fast quote providers.

No honest trading software can guarantee profit, and we do not promise it. What Private 7 gives you is the tools to trade with an edge you can measure: fast data feeds, gap analysis, automated algorithms and a Back Tester to check settings on recorded ticks before you trade. Results depend on the broker, liquidity, volatility and your settings. Trading Forex, CFDs and cryptocurrencies carries a high risk of loss, and past results do not guarantee future results.

Low-latency trading: a VPS in the broker's data centre shortens the path between trading software and broker server
VPS

Why Is Low Latency Important for Forex Arbitrage?

Latency is the time it takes for a price to reach your software and for your order to reach the broker. From a home or office PC this round trip often takes tens of milliseconds or more; from a VPS in the same data centre as the broker's server (for example LD4, NY4 or TY3) it usually drops to about one millisecond. For arbitrage, where price gaps last only milliseconds, this difference decides whether an order arrives in time.

  • Faster order delivery – orders reach the broker in milliseconds instead of travelling across the internet from your home or office.
  • Less slippage – the price has less time to move between the signal and the fill.
  • Fewer requotes and rejected orders – orders arrive while the quoted price is still valid.
  • More of the price gap captured – arbitrage windows are short: in our XAUUSD study the median stale-quote window was 34–56 ms, so every millisecond of delay counts.
  • Stable 24/7 connection – a data-centre server does not depend on your home internet, power or computer.
  • Required for HFT algorithms – latency arbitrage and other high-frequency strategies only work when the delay is lower than the price gap.

Learn how to choose and test a server in our guide to Forex VPS for latency arbitrage.
